Development Director

Job Group: 7 (This is not a bargaining unit position. Commensurate with experience, the annual salary range for this position is $110,900 - $184,700.)

The Washington Center for Equitable Growth is a nonprofit research and grantmaking organization dedicated to advancing evidence-backed ideas and policies that promote strong, stable, and broad-based economic growth. Equitable Growth engages with academics and policymakers to better understand economic inequality in the United States and its impact on economic growth. Important elements of Equitable Growth's mission include in-house, academic-quality research, and grantmaking to academic economists and other social scientists to support new research on inequality, mobility, growth, and related issues. Building a stronger bridge between academics and the policy community and elevating researchers and their work with the news media are both key to our work, with the goal of making new research relevant, accessible, and informative to the policymaking process. 


Summary:

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Development Director (DD) serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting Equitable Growth. In partnership with the President, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build Equitable Growth's visibility, impact, and financial resources. The Development Director will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $10M annual budget through the solicitation of major gifts and foundation support. The DD will expand and diversify Equitable Growth's donor base and grow the pipeline. The DD will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they seek to expand their fundraising role.


It is expected that the amount raised by Equitable Growth will increase in future years as the DD systematically and effectively strengthens the organization's overall fundraising capacity.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to meet the organization's financial goals for programmatic and operations support.
  • Systematically engage, solicit, and steward current and new foundation and major donor relationships, targeting those who share the goals of Equitable Growth's mission.
  • Work with President and leadership team to identify opportunities with corporations and foundations that might provide additional philanthropic support to the organization.
  • Mentor, coach, and lead a team of rising professionals toward success.
  • In conjunction with the development and programming teams, develop and write grant and funding proposals, concept notes, and letters of inquiry.
  • Oversee research on funding sources and trends to help position Equitable Growth ahead of major funding changes or trends.
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program to senior leadership.
  • Direct production of written material related to fundraising, including compelling proposal narratives, letters of intent, program descriptions, emails and other correspondence, and annual reports.
  • Work with policy staff to draft grant reports to donors; submit timely reports and updates to donors as appropriate.
  • Direct all aspects of fundraising operations at the organization working with development staff, from tracking expenses to fully spending out grant awards.
  • Work with finance team to manage grant modifications and financial reporting to donors; liaise with donors to obtain grant modifications and extensions as necessary.
  • Develop and manage annual revenue budgets in partnership with CEO for board approval.
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with donors by maintaining appropriate communications with funders and prospects, proactively updating donors and prospects on activities and successes, extending invitations when necessary, and identifying new potential partnerships and collaborations.
  • Provide overall guidance and support to executive staff and board members on overall revenue projections and stewardship activities.
  • Partner with and provide guidance, training, and direction to key policy leads on best practices related to fundraising and proposal processes related to program development and strategy.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function with experience managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources.
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Flexible and adaptable leadership style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside Equitable Growth.
  • High energy and passion for Equitable Growth's mission is essential.
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead with a professional and resourceful style; take initiative and manage multiple high-stakes tasks and projects at a time.
  • Experience working with a CRM, e.g., Salesforce or Raiser's Edge.
  • High emotional intelligence with the ability to lead with humility.
